In a new milestone added to its record of achievements, Jeddah United has been crowned champions of the Saudi U-17 First Division League in its inaugural 2025–2026 season, reflecting the rapid growth of women’s football in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The title was secured following an exciting final match between Jeddah United and Najmat Jeddah at King Abdulaziz University Stadium in Jeddah. The match ended 1–1 in regular time before Jeddah United claimed victory through a penalty shootout, in a game that highlighted the high level of competition and the remarkable development of women’s football, as reported by Arab News .

A Championship Reflecting Competitive Growth

The inaugural edition of the league witnessed the participation of several ambitious teams that delivered closely matched performances, creating a highly competitive environment that contributed to the emergence and development of young talent.

شارك الفريق في بطولة السعودية لكرة السلة للسيدات خلال الفترة من 1 ديسمبر 2025م وحتى 17 يناير 2026م، بمشاركة 8 فرق.

وتمكن الفريق من تحقيق المركز الثالث بعد كل من نادي القادسية و نادي العلا .

الدوري السعودي لكرة السلة للسيدات

شارك الفريق في الدوري السعودي لكرة السلة للسيدات، والذي يُسمح فيه لكل فريق باستقطاب لاعبة محترفة من الخارج للمشاركة في منافسات الدوري.

We at Jeddah United are proud to announce that our women’s team has secured first place and the gold medal in the 2025 Saudi 3x3 Women’s Basketball Championship. The tournament took place in Madinah at King Fahd Park courts from May 22 to 24, 2025. It was organized by the Ministry of Sports , under the supervision of the Saudi Basketball Federation (SBF), with key organizational contributions from AlUla Club.

The championship attracted over 1,500 enthusiastic fans and featured a competitive atmosphere, bringing together elite basketball clubs from across the Kingdom.

What is the 3x3 Basketball Championship?

The Saudi 3x3 Championship is an annual national event launched in 2020 and recognized as one of the flagship tournaments of the Saudi Basketball Federation (SBF). Played with three players per team on a half-court and within a set time limit, 3x3 basketball is known for its fast-paced and thrilling gameplay.

The tournament spans three days and features competitions in three main categories:

Men’s category
Women’s category (Jeddah United crowned champions in 2025)
U-18 Youth category

The championship aims to strengthen local competition, develop player skills, and promote basketball culture, especially among the younger generation.

3x3 basketball continues to receive growing support from the Ministry of Sports and the Saudi Basketball Federation as a powerful tool to promote sports culture, encourage community participation, and deliver high-level competitive experiences. The tournament also aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to enhance the sports sector and increase public participation in sports.

In addition to governmental support, the championship received sponsorship from several local entities, including contributions from the Royal Commission for AlUla, showcasing a model of collaboration to elevate the national sports scene.

نفتخر نحن نادي جدة يونايتد بالإعلان عن تتويج فريق السيدات بالمركز الأول والميدالية الذهبية في بطولة السعودية ٣*٣ لكرة السلة للسيدات، التي أُقيمت في المدينة المنورة على ملاعب حديقة الملك فهد خلال الفترة من ٢٢ إلى ٢٤ مايو ٢٠٢٥، بتنظيم من وزارة الرياضة وتحت إشراف الاتحاد السعودي لكرة السلة ، وبمشاركة فعّالة من نادي العُلا الذي ساهم في تنظيم البطولة.

شهدت البطولة حضورًا جماهيريًا تجاوز ١٥٠٠ متفرج من عشاق اللعبة، في أجواء تنافسية مميزة جمعت نخبة من الأندية على مستوى المملكة.

ما هي بطولة ٣*٣ لكرة السلة؟

بطولة السعودية ٣*٣ هي بطولة وطنية سنوية تُنظم منذ عام ٢٠٢٠ ، وتُعد من أبرز الفعاليات المعتمدة لدى الاتحاد السعودي لكرة السلة. ترتكز البطولة على نظام اللعب بثلاثة لاعبين ضد ثلاثة، ضمن زمن محدد ومساحة ملعب أصغر من كرة السلة التقليدية، ما يمنحها طابعًا سريعًا ومثيرًا.

تُقام البطولة على مدار ثلاثة أيام، وتتوزع مبارياتها على ثلاث فئات:

فئة الرجال
فئة السيدات (فاز بالمركز الاول جدة يونايتد ٢٠٢٥)
فئة الشباب تحت ١٨ سنة

بطلات جدة يونايتد للبلياردو

شارك فريق البلياردو النسائي التابع لنادي جدة يونايتد في الجولة الثالثة من دوري «جولدن سنت» للبلياردو و الذي ينظمه الاتحاد السعودي للبلياردو والسنوكر بمركز تدريب اتحاد البلياردو في الرياض و ذلك بمشاركة 8 اندية نسائية وهي:

نادي جدة يونايتد
نادي الاتحاد
نادي النصر
نادي الشباب
نادي الفرع
نادي الوطني
نادي الشرق
نادي نيوم

وتعد هذه المشاركة هي الثانية لفريق البلياردو النسائي بعد أن حصلوا في الموسم السابق علي المركز الخامس على مستوى المملكة في أولى مشاركتهم, و في هذا الموسم تأهلت اللاعبتان دانا أبوراشد و جوري أبو راشد للدور السادس عشر بعد انتصارهم على نادي الشباب ونادي الفرع . كمان انتصرت دانه ابوراشد على نادي الفرع و نادي الشباب في الأدوار الأولى وانتصرت جوري ابوراشد على نادي الاتحاد ونادي الفرع في الأدوار الأولى وانتصرت دانا كردي على نادي الشباب ولمار التركستاني على نادي الفرع .

و من منطلق حرص إدارة نادي جده يونايتد على كفاءة اللاعبات و جاهزيتهم تستمر التدريبات للفريق كاملا ( دانة أبوراشد – جوري أبوراشد – ليان حلبي – لمار التركستاني – تالة قملو – دانة كردي – ابتهاج بخيت – نردين الاندجاني – تالة خيرو ) للتجهيز للجولة الرابعة في مدينة جدة والتي ستكون بتاريخ ٣ مايو ٢٠٢٤

Jeddah United Building Ties with Teams in the UAE

JEDDAH — Basketball is no more a US sport, people enjoy watching on their TV sets. They enjoy it even more on the court. Furthermore, more and more girls are taking up the sport in the region.

This was very much evident on a recent trip by a Jeddah-based women’s basketball team, Jeddah United, to the United Arab Emirates.

Jeddah United played two friendly games on the visit and won them both. It beat Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, 40-37 and then won the encounter against Sharjah Ladies Club 35-32.

The games presented an opportunity to foster ties between Saudi and UAE women basketball teams.

The visit was a training opportunity for the Jeddah United players. It helped them gain experience and gauge their sporting abilities at the Gulf level.

On a team level, it was a bonding experience where several team activities took place.

The friendly games initiative aimed at building cooperation between the UAE and Saudi teams besides providing the players with an intercultural experience.

Lina Almaeena, co-founder and director of Jeddah United Sports Co., said the team was inspired by the spirit, friendliness and sportsmanship shown by the Emirati teams.

Jeddah United has previously played friendly games against University of Malay, Aramex Al-Riyadi, Shabab Al-Urdon, Jordan; American University in Sharjah.

The Jeddah United women’s basketball team is sponsored by Sipco, Aquafina and Femi9. Kempinski Hotel and Mall of Emirates have become Jeddah United’s strategic partners and partially sponsored the accommodation of the team and the delegation.

ينظِّم نادي جدة يونايتد السبت القادم برعاية الاتحاد السعودي للرياضة للجميع وبالتعاون مع الاتحادين السعودي والدولي للعبة، بطولة كرة السلة 3×3 للنساء لـ 35 عامًا فما فوق، وذلك في الصالة المغلقة بجامعة الأعمال والتكنولوجيا بجدة.

وتهدف البطولة لتوسيع نطاق ممارسة الرياضة على المستوى المجتمعي، وتأكيدًا على رؤية المملكة 2030 وتحقيق مستهدفات برنامج جودة الحياة التي يسعى من خلالها اتحاد الرياضة للجميع بالدعم المباشر من وزارة الرياضة في زيادة نسبة ممارسة الرياضة والنشاط البدني في المجتمع، حيث أقيمت كذلك خلال المدة الماضية بطولة 3×3 لفوق الأربعين عامَا للرجال لكرة السلة واندرجت تحت الاتحاد الدولي لكرة السلة FIBA.

مواجهات قوية بدوري السلة السعودي للسيدات

تنطلق منافسات الموسم الجديد من دوري السلة السعودي للسيدات 2023، الإثنين المقبل، المقرر إقامته على مجموعتين مناطقيًا، في الرياض وجدة. ونشر الاتحاد السعودي لكرة السلة، الجمعة، عبر حسابه الرسمي على "تويتر"، جدول لمباريات الدوري النسائي، وتحديدًا مجموعتي الرياض وجدة، حيث سيشارك في الدوري في كلا المجموعتين 7 فرق.

ويتواجد في مجموعة الرياض 3 فرق، هي الهلال والنصر والعاصمة، وفي مجموعة جدة تتواجد فرق الاتحاد والأهلي وجدة يونايتد والنورس، حيث ستتواجه الفرق بين بعضها 3 مرات. وكشف اتحاد السلة أن صاحب المركز الثالث بمجموعة الرياض سيلاقي فريق القادسية، من المنطقة الشرقية، بنظام الفوز بمباراتين من 3، والفائز يتأهل للأدوار النهائية.. والأمر ذاته ينطبق على صاحب المركز الثالث بمجموعة جدة والذي سيلاقي فريق العلا، من المدينة المنورة.

وتتركز أنظار الدوري على فريق جدة يونايتد، لأنه سيدخل المنافسات بعد فوزه بالميدالية الذهبية في دورة الألعاب السعودية 2022 في نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني الماضي في الرياض، إذ يعتبر جدة يونايتد من أندية قطاع الخاص.

أنشأت وزارة الرياضة السعودية، في 21 يونيو/حزيران 2021، منصة "نافس" المعنية بدخول المستثمرين والشركات لقطاع الرياضة عبر الأندية الخاصة، والتي يسمح لها بخوض المنافسات الرسمية بالبلاد ومنافسة الأندية الحكومية. وتشهد مجموعة جدة أيضًا وجود فريق آخر من قطاع الخاص فريق النورس، الذي تأهل إلى مجموعة جدة، بعد تفوقه بالمباراة الفاصلة على فريق أكاديمية المستقبل (35-26).

من ملعب صغير بالسعودية إلى مباريات عالمية.. من هن لاعبات - جدة يونايتد

جدة، المملكة العربية السعودية (CNN) -- في ملعب كبير لكرة السلة تنيره أضواء ضخمة، تقف فتاة بكل إصرار وبيدها كرة سلة تتخبط بالأرض كل بضعة ثواني في حركة ثابتة ومتكررة.

وتتحرك الشابة السعودية بوثبات سريعة نحو المرمى، وهي ترتدي قميص فريق "جدة يونايتد" الخمري اللون. وتسدد روان جمال العامودي، البالغة من العمر 22 عاماً، الهدف وتبتسم بحماس، بينما تتذكر السبب الرئيسي الذي دفعها إلى الاشتراك مع فريق "جدة يونايتد" لكرة السلة في المملكة العربية السعودية، إذ كانت الشابة في صغرها مليئة بالطاقة والحماس، لذا قررت والدتها أن توجه طاقة ابنتها إلى الرياضة.

ولم يكن الفريق الذي اشتركت فيه الشابة في عام 2008، قد ساعدها في "تفريغ طاقاتها" بأسلوب إيجابي فحسب، بل استطاعت من خلاله "تقوية شخصيتها"أيضاَ. وتحلم روان اليوم بتحقيق "العديد من الإنجازات" والاشتراك في مسابقات وبطولات عالمية.

وتشارك مؤسسة فريق "جدة يونايتد"، لينا الميعنا، حلم اللاعبات في فريقها بالتنافس مع فرق أخرى في بطولات عالمية، إذ سعت في عام 2003 إلى تحويل حبها لكرة السلة إلى فريق فعال على أرض الواقع، وذلك بعد تخرجها من المدرسة، حيث لاحظت عدم "مظلة معينة" للاعبات كرة السلة في جدة.

واشترك الفريق في عدد من المباريات المحلية داخل جدة والسعودية منذ تأسيسه، إلا أنه انضم أيضاً إلى عدة مباريات ودية سنوية في بلدان عربية وغربية مختلفة بهدف "بناء جسور من التواصل" بين السعودية والدول الأخرى و"لتغيير الصورة النمطية للمرأة السعودية وخاصة ما قبل الإعلان عن رؤية 2030" على حد تعبير مؤسسة الفريق السعودية.

وتتذكر الميعنا الطريق الطويلة التي قطعها الفريق منذ تأسيسه، من خلال تسليط الضوء على صعوبة إيجاد "كوادر رياضية ومدربات بمستوى عال"، إلا أنها تؤكد أن الوضع اليوم "بات أسهل" على حد تعبيرها، بسبب اهتمام الحكومة السعودية بالرياضة.

The story of Jeddah United: Turning a dream into a reality

JEDDAH (Saudi Arabia) - Jeddah United made history in Sharjah at the Arab Women's Sports Tournament in 2018. Though they may not have exactly ran through their competition at the event, it didn't matter. Jeddah United was the first women's local team under the Saudi Arabian Basketball Federation (SBF) to play in the competition, winning the tournament's sportsmanship award along the way.

It was a dream come true for Lina Khaled Almaeena, co-founder of the Jeddah United club.

"That was one of the first times that my dreams came true," Lina told FIBA.basketball. "For our club to be on TV and people were watching in a restaurant here, it was very popular."

Lina wrote about her dreams back in 1995 when she was a teen editor in chief of the Jeddah Girls Gazette.

"We dream of coming home, switching on the TV and watching our female players on a basketball court 'on the air' during a crucial game," she typed down as one of her six "Wild Female Dreams" as the article was titled.

She didn't know at the time that she would eventually make that specific dream come true over two decades later by founding Jeddah United.

Today, Jeddah United is an accredited sports academy with a class A certification in Saudi Arabia. The club has been promoting sports in women and youth as well as men for nearly 20 years.

"It has already established its national goals to build a strong generation morally and physically, investing its energy, time and effort to help the youth, and use the language of sport as a source of soft diplomacy," she also said, as per Eye of Riyadh.

"If you ask me how big [Jeddah United] is, I would say Jeddah United has incubated around ten academies and training groups, out of which nine are still in existence," Lina said in a separate chat with FIBA.basketball. "It has been an incubator for the past 17 years."

To understand why Jeddah United is a big deal, one has to have a better understanding of its beginning. Things were different back in the early 2000s in Saudi Arabia, and it's what pushed Lin to work towards establishing the club.

"…at the time between 2003 to 2006, entertainment was very limited in Saudi Arabia," she said as she explained what drove her to found the club. "There were no cinemas. There were no concerts. There were so many different aspects of international events that women couldn't attend. So obviously, [founding the club] was a holistic approach to psychological, physical, social networking and gathering together to have a good time."

So in 2003, she called her old buddies from school.

Lina attended a private school during her childhood, so basketball was a sport that was practiced, whereas public schools did not have such programs. She had always been inspired by basketball by her uncle, Tariq, who bought rims and placed them in her family's garage. She also played on her high school team, and it was her teammates that she was reaching out to on the phone in 2003 with an exciting idea.

Lina wanted to form a local basketball team.

"Regarding the conversation I had with my teammates, it was very exciting because it was the high school team which we had not played together in 4-5 years," Lina recalled. "It was very refreshing and exciting."

"When I called the members, there was no hesitation whatsoever. It was kind of like a beautiful flashback from the past, and there was a lot of energy and excitement for them to come.

The team used the family's court at her house and the Jaguars - they were not yet called Jeddah United - started training in March 2003.

Jeddah United always had high expectations, but as the same as any organization big or small, they started small. For three years up until 2006, the club was mostly just the team playing basketball. Lina said it was just out of passion and more of additional activity to enjoy. However, the growth of the club during those three years was large and rapid.

"More people wanted to join," Lina said. "Then I realized my time and energy [I was giving] for the team as a player, captain, co-founder, and management."

She realized that now she could transform this passion project into a career. She had put in so much time and energy into it, that she figured she might as well turn it into a business. At that time, there was no gym licensing or club licensing for women, but that didn't deter her aspirations. After getting advice from a lawyer and acquiring a license through the ministry of commerce, Jeddah United was legally established.

"From 2006, which was the transformation to a commercial entity, we have been working on three different fronts," Lina explained. "First of all, it is to locally promote the culture of sports and team sports for women and youth, specifically basketball, in Saudi Arabia.

"Also, at the international level, we have international trips to change the image and stereotype of Saudi Arabian women globally. We travel to many countries around the world with that objective."

"Now, also on a local level, we were very big on media because we thought it was very important to be able to raise awareness and encourage girls and the youth."

Lina mentions how she had a lot of debates and that there were a lot of TV and media interviews and reports when he talked about girls in sports.

"It was a taboo at the time, and I thought that was very important because it was important to have a healthy national debate through the media, whether it was print media or broadcast, TV or radio."

One key moment was when the Jeddah United women's team played in an international competition in Jordan back in 2009. Their participation had gained much interest from various media outlets from Reuters to the Arabiya channel and 4,000 other channels. The mass amount of attention was a huge turning point for Jeddah United, as this was even before the popularization of social media and pre-Saudi Vision 2030.

"I would definitely say the 2009 game in Jordan was huge because after that, we were all over the media in TV broadcasts like Arabiya, primetime news," Lina said. "before that, it was mostly self-censorship from local newspapers to publish anything in the Arabic print."

"You could find that we had the first women's street basketball tournament in 2006 - which I won. I was very happy winning that," she laughed. "Things were happening before [2009], and we'll find it published in the English press in Saudi Arabia. But in terms of the local Arabic media, they were very conservative, and it didn't feel like they wanted the heat of publishing any news or PR in that regard.

"Obviously, when you look at it from an international perspective on how women's sports evolved around the world when you look at the Boston Marathon when women weren't able to participate and were pushed, that's the very normal evolution for women in sports in Saudi Arabia, especially since it is a young country."

The ball kept on rolling from there for Jeddah United and the women's basketball scene in Saudi Arabia.

In addition to what Jeddah United had building towards, "Saudi Vision 2030" was announced in April 2016. The national strategic framework empowered women in Saudi Arabia in every aspect - politically, economically, and socially. Driven by Vision 2030, Physical Education was integrated into girls' schools, women gym licenses were granted, and women were able to attend stadiums.

At the Abu Dhabi Special Olympics 2019 in March, the Saudi Arabia Unified basketball team went undefeated, winning the gold medal.

A few months later, six girls who played for Jeddah United and Riyadh United were nominated by the Saudi Arabian Basketball Federation (SBF) to form the first-ever women’s basketball national team. In October 2019, They competed at the sixth Gulf Cooperation Council in Kuwait.

Even the club name, Jeddah United, is a reference to their support to encourage women in sports, especially basketball. Aside from being a direct homage to the city of Jeddah, it refers to how the club has always supported the power of women.

"In Arabic, [Jeddah] means grandmother, in reference to Eve. It is known to be where Eve had descended and where Eve is buried today in old Jeddah," Lani explained, referring to the archeological site "Tomb of Eve" in Jeddah.

The "United" part of the name was added because the club always had international aspirations from the beginning. Lina says that they were looking to make an impact on the same level as those of DC United or Manchester United from around the world.

The proud and strong club co-founder remembers being inspired by famous Muslim basketball players like Hakeem Olajuwon. She remembers him having some of his biggest performances during the holy month of Ramadan. She remembers meeting Olajuwon as a part of the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at the University of New Mexico, where he presented a speech and held a fundraiser.

"I thought about these types of world basketball leaders who were doing good for the society and not just in the societies they were from, but also on a global level. I thought that was really powerful."

Now, Lina, along with Jeddah United, is working towards doing good for the society themselves as much as they can as well. The club has continuously pushed forward the women's basketball scene not only in Saudi Arabia but in the Gulf as well.

"Women's sports are a positive force and should be an integral part of every young woman's life," Lina said as per CGTN.

Jeddah United are already in charge of the sports programs in a lot of universities and schools. One of the club's objectives is to be a member under the Saudi Arabian league, too.

What started as just a passionate extra time activity has now morphed into something that could potentially inspire women and youth all over the world. Jeddah United has helped Lina realize one of her dreams, and hopefully, it will somehow help others realize their own dreams in the future.

Co-founder and chairperson Lina Almaeena tells Arab News what it means to win the Saudi Games for the competition’s only private club " Everything starts with a dream. Then a goal."

Almost 20 years ago, Lina Almaeena had a dream to set up a basketball team under the name Jeddah United.

At the time, establishing a competitive female basketball team was not as easy as it is today, quite simply because in the past, the Kingdom had no basketball competitions for women to speak of.

But things have changed drastically in recent years.

Female sports and leagues are proliferating and only recently, saw many individuals and teams take part in the Saudi Games 2022, one of the country’s biggest-ever sporting events.

The tournament saw competitions in more than 45 sports, and one of them was women’s basketball.

It has been a long road to get to this point for Almaeena and her colleagues. “Jeddah United started around 20 years ago at a time when sports for girls was self-censored, when there was no legislation for sports clubs, no PE in school,” Almaeena said.

“Throughout the years, Jeddah United, under a commercial license, trained tens of thousands of women and young girls in team sports within private courts and fields. The women’s team traveled the world, from Malaysia to the US, to learn from playing friendly matches with other teams, as well as changing stereotypes of Saudi women in the media.”

“We tried as a sports community to recruit international experts living in the Kingdom,” she said. “We also hired female coaches and collaborated with international federations like the NBA and WNBA, with the aim of promoting the culture of sports, and especially team sports, in the Kingdom. We started a Khobar United branch and Riyadh United in 2011 as our vision was a united, energetic society.”

The years of hard work paid off. “We are so honored to have won first place in the historic Saudi Games’ basketball competition,” said the co-founder and chairperson of Jeddah United. “This honor comes from the fact that the main official sponsor of the Saudi Olympics was the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.

“We are reaping the fruits of Vision 2030, increasing participation (in) physical activity and forming a healthier and happier society for everyone living on this land,” she said. “The Saudi Games opening had an energy, I felt like it was the energy of the crown prince whose bold reforms enabled us as women specifically to celebrate, participate and compete in nation-building in general, and sports on this occasion.”

Almaeena is grateful for the backing she has received from leading figures in the Kingdom. She highlighted the support of the Minister of Sport Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal; Prince Fahd bin Jalawi, the vice president of the Saudi Olympic Committee; Princess Delayel Nahar Al-Saud, advisor to the VP; and Adwa Al-Arifi, deputy minister for planning and development at the Ministry of Sport. She also thanked the presidents of all the sporting federations, as well as those who helped make her “wonderful dream come true.”

“Jeddah United was undefeated, the only private club among government-backed clubs,” she said of the Saudi Games experience. “That marked a successful example of privatization and how PPP will contribute to the reduction of cost and support the development of the national economy.

Almaeena also thanked and congratulated the athletes, coaches, administration, as well the team’s sponsors UBT, Haji Husein Alireza & Co., Mafasel Clinics and Layal Spa. She said others who made a difference were motivational speakers and doctors who took the time to talk to the team before the Games, which included Dr. Hala Mosli, Dr. Mohammad Hakeem and Dr. Hussar Alnajjar.

“Last but not least we owe this win to the families of all the athletes, who supported their loved ones throughout a very intense training period and competition with their physical, mental and emotional support,” Almaeena added. “I for sure owe it to my family and friends who really made me believe that we will win the gold. This occasion gave us a sense of increased strength and unity of the country with a number of athletes coming together from across Saudi to compete.”

“We look forward to next year’s new edition of the Saudi Games,” she said.

The Games have become the largest national sports event in the history of Kingdom

This past weekend my wife and I along with several family members flew to the capital city of Riyadh from Jeddah to root for our niece Lina Almaeena whose female basketball club, Jeddah United, managed to secure a berth in the finals.

The awards that lay ahead were the gold medals and the glittering prize of one million riyals to the winning team.

The Saudi Games kicked off from 27 October to 7 November 2022, in Riyadh city with the principal vision to provide a platform for Saudi athletes to excel to their best potential, and inspire Saudi youth through sports and demonstrate the Kingdom's capabilities globally in hosting the largest events.

With the participation of more than 6000 athletes and 2,000 technical and administrative supervisors representing more than 200 clubs across the Kingdom, contestants are competing in 45 sports categories both as individuals and teams. Moreover, 5 games are dedicated to Paralympic sports.

Furthermore, the first-placed clubs are reported to receive SAR 1 million, SAR 350,000 for second-placed clubs, and SAR 100,000 for third-placed clubs.

Largest national sports event

The Games have become the largest national sports event in the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and have attracted a large following across the land.

Our interest in this particular event was to witness the culmination of over 18 years of hard work and perseverance against very formidable odds when my niece decided to take the challenge and form a sports club for women during an era when women were expected to be unseen and unheard of.

There were no gyms or clubs for women then, and nor were sports allowed in girls’ schools by law! Such were the strangleholds placed on Saudi women that eventually led to a rise in obesity and related diseases among inactive girls and women.

A quick look back into conditions just a few years ago would bring to mind the relentless attacks on the rights of women by extremists who sought to shape the Saudi culture according to their own twisted ideology. It was a time when no working woman was spared their wrath.

They stood firmly against the idea of women being employed in the professional field. Notwithstanding the fact that the country needed the cadre of its educated women to foster progress, such extremists had been an impediment to the progress of women, invariably using the veiled threat of religion against such women.

There were also been some derisive comments on the different types of cloaks (Abayas) women use to cover themselves. It would have been easy to have given up in the face of such odds, but fortunately, my niece persevered and managed to eventually license the first women’s sports club in the kingdom. Her basketball team in the finals in the biggest-ever national games was definitely something not to be missed.

The game itself was nerve-racking with the score see-sawing until the last few minutes but then came success. Her team won and finally, my niece reached the pinnacle of triumph after all the years of hard work and sacrifices.

Kingdom's decisive actions

Suffice to say it would not have been dreamt of let alone possible was it not for the decisive actions of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, popularly known as MBS who brought in their vision for a progressive future through Vision 2030.

We celebrated late into the night going over every shot and every score. Our euphoria carried on through the next day on our return journey back to Jeddah. The only blot during this whole trip was having to wait for more than 25 minutes in the taxiway upon arrival as there was no marshaling crew in sight.

Apparently, it was a shift change and nobody bothered to cover arrivals. Insult was added to injury when we were offloaded into buses and driven around the expanse of the airport for another 20 minutes before we made our way into the terminal.

However, as we loaded ourselves into the vehicle to take us home, we could not help but marvel at the rapid changes this country is going through, a transformation that could not have been dreamt of just a few years ago. Congratulations to my niece Lina and all those other females that never gave up on their dreams.

Indeed, there is much to thank for being around in today’s Saudi Arabia.

بدأت تظهر بوادر نجاح الرياضة السعودية في الدخول لحقبة الاستثمار الرياضي وأندية قطاع الخاص، بعد أن حصد نادي جدة يونايتد ذهبية كرة السلة النسائية، أمس الأربعاء، بدورة الألعاب السعودية 2022 في الرياض. ويعتبر جدة يونايتد الفريق الوحيد الذي يشارك في منافسات كرة السلة النسائية بدورة الألعاب السعودية 2022 كفريق قطاع خاص، بفضل نجاحه في الحصول على رخصة نادٍ رياضي من منصة (نافس) التابعة لوزارة الرياضة السعودية، المعنية بدخول المستثمرين والشركات لقطاع الرياضة.

وقد أطلقت وزارة الرياضة منصة (نافس) في 21 يونيو/حزيران الماضي، عبر وزير الرياضة الأمير عبد العزيز بن تركي الفيصل، الذي أعلن في وقتها لأكثر من وسيلة إعلامية محلية بأن الوزارة تطمح لرفع عدد الأندية السعودية من 170 نادياً إلى أكثر من 3 آلاف نادٍ في 2030. وضرب الوزير للإعلام المحلي مثالاً عن دولة البرتغال التي تمتلك 850 نادياً وعدد سكانها 10 ملايين نسمة، مقابل امتلاك السعودية 170 نادياً بسكان يتجاوز 30 مليون نسمة، قبل أن يعلن الوزير في أبريل/نيسان الماضي عن إصدار 10 تراخيص لنادٍ رياضي، مع وجود 100 طلب للترخيص.

وفي 21 سبتمبر/أيلول الماضي، أعلنت وزارة الرياضة عن دخول 4 أندية قطاع خاص لأول مرة في منافسات الدوري السعودي للدرجة الرابعة للرجال، وهي أندية المخواة والشعبة والفضل والدمام. وتستمر وزارة الرياضية حتى الآن في دعم القطاع الخاص بمجال الرياضة، حيث أطلقت قبل 3 أيام مبادرة تحمل اسم (كفالة) والتي تهدف إلى التمويل المالي للأندية الخاصة التي تحتاج للتمويل من أجل امتلاك منشأة رياضية، عبر مشاركة 12 بنكا و23 شركة تمويل.

وقد تم رصد مبلغ التمويل من مبادرة (كفالة) للمنشآت المتوسطة بمبلغ 15 مليون ريال، وللمنشآت الصغيرة 5 ملايين ريال، وللمنشآت متناهية الصغر 2.5 مليون ريال. وكشفت وزارة الاستثمار السعودية، في أغسطس/أب الماضي عبر موقعها الرسمي، بأن مساهمة القطاع الرياضي في الناتج المحلي الإجمالي بحلول عام 2030 ستبلغ 4.8 مليار دولار.

وفي مجال كرة القدم النسائية، اشترط الاتحاد السعودي لكرة القدم على الفرق المشاركة في الدوري الممتاز ودوري الدرجة الأولى إصدار سجل تجاري للفريق، من وزارة التجارة، مع فتح حساب بنكي مرتبط بالسجل التجاري الخاص بالفريق. وسيساهم الشرط الجديد في تحول الفرق المجتمعية النسائية إلى كيانات تجارية قادرة على تنويع مصادر دخلها حتى تتمكن في المستقبل القريب من التحول إلى (أندية خاصة) عبر منصة (نافس) من وزارة الرياضة، بشرط أن تتمكن من امتلاك منشأة رياضية.

Shukur acquires Jeddah United to nurture local talent

The partnership aims to develop the sports economy in Saudi Arabia in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030

JEDDAH: The National Sports Talent Company, also known as Shukur, announced on Monday that it acquired Jeddah United, a sports academy, in partnership with the University of Business and Technology.

The partnership aims to develop the sports economy in Saudi Arabia in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and Saudi Quality of Life Program.

Lina Al-Maeena, chairperson of Shukur and owner of JU, said: “Shukur includes a number of investors, led by UBT Co., and by this, our vision is completed by partnering with the sports and educational sector with an integrated vision that supports the sports economy in the Kingdom.”

She said that the company aspires to keep pace with the international sports sector through the exchange of experiences.

Al-Maeena told Arab News: “We have looked at sports as holistic … it is not just the actual physical aspect, but it is also educational, mental and emotional.

“All these aspects combined together create champions. We would like the world to cheer for Saudi local teams and I think it is doable, especially with the Vision and the Ministry of Sports objectives.”

She added: “We are here today reaping the fruits of Vision 2030 that truly empowered women with strong legislation in all fields, including the promising sports sector, especially after the fundamental changes made by the Ministry of Sports, specifically the launch of the Nafes platform, which aims to enhance the level of sports, the quality of competition and the development of athletes’ performance.”

Mohanad Dahlan, managing director and CEO of UBT Co., said that UBT and JU believe that a return on investment in people is the goal of the deal. “Through this partnership, we established the first local company with a global vision and our goal is to make Jeddah United like any international sports club.”

Dahlan told Arab News that UBT has outsourced its sports operations to build a professional entity that will enable students and fellows to be part of sports in different aspects.

“We and Shukur are working with the majority of citizens and we are responsible toward the community to enable those citizens to become better people by working on the brain and the physique at the same time, so this is where the university and the training come side by side,” he said.

A women’s basketball tournament will start next Friday, involving seven government clubs as part of the first-ever Saudi Games, which was launched two weeks ago in Jeddah.

Al-Maeena said that UBT is the official sponsor of women taking part in the Saudi Games.

“We did not dream one day that women’s sport would turn into what it reached so quickly and smoothly,” she added.

Al-Maeena said: “This achievement by itself highlights the fact that we are a true example of privatization. At the same time, we have been in the field for 20 years, transforming, trying to upgrade, and now we have six of our girls in the national team. So hopefully, we will just continue.”

Jeddah United has seven locations to train Saudi youth. By next year, it plans to have 50 more locations across the Kingdom’s 13 regions.

"الرياضية للجميع" ينظم بطولة كرة السلة 3×3 بجدة

نظم الاتحاد السعودي للرياضة للجميع بالتعاون مع أكاديمية جدة يونايتد بطولة كرة السلة 3×3، التي تستهدف الفئات العمرية من 35 عاما فما فوق لكلا الجنسين، وذلك لتوسيع نطاق ممارسة الرياضة على المستوى المجتمعي.

وتنقسم البطولة إلى فئتين، الأولى وهي بطولة 3x3 لكرة السلة للرجال فوق 40 عاماً، والثانية للسيدات فوق 35 عاماً، حيث تأتي هذه البطولة تأكيدًا على رؤية المملكة 2030 وتحقيق مستهدفات برنامج جودة الحياة التي يسعى فيها اتحاد الرياضة للجميع بالدعم المباشر من وزارة الرياضة في زيادة نسبة ممارسة الرياضة والنشاط البدني.

بدوره قال صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خالد بن الوليد بن طلال رئيس الاتحاد السعودي للرياضة للجميع " نسعد برؤية تنظيم مثل هذه الفعاليات والأنشطة الرياضية التي تستهدف مختلف أفراد المجتمع، وذلك في سبيل جعل الرياضة جزءا من أسلوب حياتنا اليومية، وهذا ما نسعى إلى تحقيقه عبر دعم وتمكين الجهات المجتمعية ذات العلاقة، وشركاء النجاح في منظومة الرياضة".

دشنت اليوم أكاديمية جدة يونايتد حدثًا فريدًا من نوعه وهو إقامة بطولة كرة السلة المكونة من ثلاثة أشخاص لمن تعدت أعمارهم فوق الأربعين عامًا تحت رعاية الاتحاد السعودي للرياضة الجميع وبرنامج جودة الحياة.

قال عبيد غازي مدني شريك مؤسس أكاديمية جدة يونايتد: أعشق كرة السلة، وبصفتي مسؤول عنها بالإكاديمية، فإنني أدرك مدى أهميتها وفوائدها. وتابع: لذلك قررت استهداف من بلغوا الأربعين عامًا فما فوق، لتنظيم فاعلية رياضية للعبة، بغرض اجتماعي تحفيزي وترويجي أيضًا لكرة السلة لدى جميع الأوساط، بدعم من اتحاد الرياضة للجميع، وبرنامج جودة الحياة التابع لوزارة الرياضة وأوضح مدني أن البطولة تقام بمشاركة 18 فريقًا، كل فريق يتكون من أربعة لاعبين، ثلاثة داخل الملعب، وواحد احتياط، على أن يكون زمن المباراة عشرة دقائق، ويصل للمباراة النهائية الأكثر تسجيلًا للنقاط.

أما بسمة الحسيني مديرة أكاديمية جدة يونايتد فرع النساء فقالت: إن من أهداف البطولة، رفع نسبة الوعي بأهمية الرياضة، ولتحفيز جميع الأعمار لمزاولتها، من خلال التعاون مع اتحاد الرياضة للجميع. وأضافت: البطولة حظيت بحماس وإقبال كبير من الجنسين، وهدفنا جميعًا حث جميع الأعمار على ممارسة الرياضة.

أكاديمية الرياض يونايتد لكرة السلة تزور سويسرا

تلبية لدعوة من فخامة الرئيس السويسري السابق -وزير الاقتصاد حالياً- يولي مورير، زار سويسرا وفد من (أكاديمية الرياض يونايتد لكرة السلة للسيدات) بهدف تعزيز التبادل الثقافي بين البلدين وخاصة في المجال الرياضي.

وتلقت الأكاديمية الدعوة أثناء الزيارة الرسمية للرئيس السويسري آنذاك إلى المملكة العربية السعودية في أكتوبر الماضي، والتي تأتي نتيجة لمبادرة الرياض يونايتد للتبادل الرياضي الدبلوماسي مع فريق الدبلوماسيات بقيادة السفيرة البلجيكية لدى المملكة، دومينيك مينور.

وشملت الدعوة برنامجا تدريبيا في المركز الفيدرالي الرياضي للمنتخبات السويسرية، وزيارة للسفارة السعودية في بيرن، حيث كان في استقبال وفد الأكاديمية هناك القائم بالأعمال بسفارة المملكة لدى سويسرا سعادة الدكتور فرحان الفرحان.

كما تضمنت الزيارة اجتماعاً مع وزير الاقتصاد وسفيرة سويسرا لشؤون الشرق الأوسط تاسفي. وضم الوفد عدداً من القيادات النسائية المتنوعة من القطاع الدبلوماسي والأكاديمي والقانوني والتنموي والإبداع المجتمعي، بالإضافة للرياضي بقيادة الأستاذة لينا المعينا، عضو مجلس الشورى السعودي والشريك المؤسس لأكاديمية الرياض يونايتد.

رافق الوفد خلال الزيارة السيدة بريجيت شالير زوجة السفير السويسري لدى المملكة، ومثله كل من: د. نورة المساعد عضو مجلس الشورى، وداليا فطاني مؤسسة استديو لوتشيا، ودانية آل معينا الرئيس التنفيذي للجمعية الأولى، والأستاذة مها عمر، والمحامية بدرية مدير، وسيدة الأعمال بتول باروم.

في ملعب كبير لكرة السلة تنيره أضواء ضخمة، تقف فتاة بكل إصرار وبيدها كرة سلة تتخبط بالأرض كل بضعة ثواني في حركة ثابتة ومتكررة. وتتحرك الشابة السعودية بوثبات سريعة نحو المرمى، وهي ترتدي قميص فريق "جدة يونايتد" الخمري اللون. وتسدد روان جمال العامودي، البالغة من العمر 22 عاماً، الهدف وتبتسم بحماس، بينما تتذكر السبب الرئيسي الذي دفعها إلى الاشتراك مع فريق "جدة يونايتد" لكرة السلة في المملكة العربية السعودية، إذ كانت الشابة في صغرها مليئة بالطاقة والحماس، لذا قررت والدتها أن توجه طاقة ابنتها إلى الرياضة.

Saudi women slam dunk sports taboo

A group of women basketball players in Saudi Arabia has been defying stereotypes as one of the few female sports teams in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia practices an austere form of Islam in which women are forbidden from playing sport in public – as well as driving, or traveling without the permission of a male guardian.

But Jeddah United, which has grown its membership over the past decade from a dozen to 350, mostly children of both genders, works around these restrictions by playing and practicing on a gender-segregated private court.

Conservative clerics in Saudi Arabia have argued there are religious reasons for excluding women from sport. Sheikh Adnan Bahereth, who preaches in the holy city of Mecca, told CNN that form-fitting athletic clothing was immoral, and that women should be veiled and remain at home.

But the female athletes of Jeddah United, based in Saudi Arabia’s second-largest city, say that, although sport remains a minority pursuit among women in their country, attitudes are slowly changing.

“Four years ago it was more of a taboo to talk about,” said team captain Leena Al Maeena. “Today, there’s more acceptance. There’s a lot more companies willing to support us. So, I really think as a society we are evolving.”

Perhaps the biggest symbol of this shift was Saudi Arabia’s announcement last month that it woul d allow female athletes to compete at the Olympics f or the first time at the 2012 Games.

Previously, the kingdom has been one of only three countries – along with Brunei an d Qatar – that banned women from competing. All have now dropped the policy.

Ye t no female athletes have been identified so far to represent Saudi Arabia in London, and if women are sent to compete, they will still face restrictions. Women athletes must have their male guardian’s permission and be accompanied by him to all events, wear appropriate Islamic dress, and refrain from mixing with men during the event.

Jeddah United’s Hadeer Sadagah, 18, dreams of someday competing at the Olympics, but said: “The society is still not accepting of Saudi women playing sports.”

But Al Maeena says attitudes towards female athletes are changing, and much of the reason is growing public awareness of the health benefits of sport. Basketball helped her overcome post-partum depression following the birth of her first child. “I felt like I needed something to get better,” she said. Others in the team had played basketball to help them in their battle with eating and body-image disorders.

“It really helped all these women. They went back to their normal lifestyle,” Al Maeena said. “We just looked at it as something not just from an entertainment point of view. It’s bigger than that.”

New While the women still receive criticism from conservatives, it does not deter them from taking to the court.

“We’re having fun, we’re all girls. We’re doing something that’s healthy for our bodies and our minds,” said 24-year-old Nour Fitiany.

Al Maeena said she hoped the team’s example would help encourage public debate about women in sport, and demonstrate to “the opposing segments in society that we’re not going against our religious or cultural beliefs.”

“At the end of the day, we’re all law-abiding citizens who want to develop our youth,” she said. “We don’t want them to get into smoking and drugs and wasting their time.”

Saudi Women push for the right to play sports

The image of 24-year-old Nour Fitiany resting courtside as the pounding of basketballs and thumping of feet reverberated around her wouldn’t merit a second glance in most countries.

But in Saudi Arabia, where girls are banned from sports in state schools, powerful clerics castigate women for exercising and female gyms must adhere to strict regulations, Fitiany’s ambition to play basketball - let alone represent her country in international tournaments - is a bold political statement.

“I hope that when they see that there are girls who really want to play, and who do play regardless of the obstacles that lie in their path, they realize that they have to do something,” she said, dressed in a baby blue t-shirt and grey jogging pants, spinning a basketball on her index finger.

Female participation in sports has long been a controversial issue in the conservative Islamic kingdom, which on February 15 was lambasted by Human Rights Watch for never having sent a woman athlete to the Olympics.

The stance of the official Supreme Council of Religious Scholars is represented by Sheikh Abdullah al-Maneea, who said in 2009 that the excessive “movement and jumping” needed in football and basketball might cause girls to tear their hymens and lose their virginity.

After King Abdullah moved last year to bring women into the country’s political process, however, there have been some signs authorities may allow sportswomen to compete internationally and make it easier for girls to exercise.

The HRW report said the National Olympic committee had “indicated” it would not stop women athletes taking part in the Games if they were invited, and speculation has been rife that the government will send equestrian Dalma Malhas to compete in this years Olympics in London.

The Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority told Reuters earlier this year there are plans to introduce after-hours physical education classes for both girls and boys.

The kingdom’s official sporting body, the Saudi General Presidency of Youth Welfare, did not respond to Reuters questions on the issue.

JUST FOR MALES

Sports in the patriarchal society of Saudi Arabia has long been reserved as an activity for men. Even stadiums for watching sports prohibit females to be present.

Women are able to play in the privacy of their homes or in private schools but as soon as they step beyond that to play professionally or in organized teams in public competitions they are publicly slammed for going against their natural role.

Newspaper articles that refer to such women as “shameless” when they play sports are a cause of great embarrassment for the women and their families. Some have even received text messages advising them to stay at home and tend to their household duties as mothers and wives.

“If there is no support from the family we can not get into these types of activities, some people are extremist or extra conservative” said Hadeer Sadagah, 17, who plays with Fitiany on their basketball team, Jeddah United.

Jeddah United was set up in 2003 to promote women’s fitness; Malhas, who specializes in show jumping, trained privately and has competed in international tournaments since she was young.

A group of Saudi women is also planning a hiking expedition to Everest base camp this summer as part of a charity fundraising exercise to promote a healthy lifestyle for breast cancer patients.

Billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of the king who is known to be a supporter of women’s rights, has included women in his Kingdom Equestrian Team, part of his company Kingdom Holding, which has allowed Saudi women to compete in international competitions since 2007.

Liberal Saudis consider women who participate in sports to be pioneers and encourage the women to play regardless of the obstacles.

“We have a very famous Arabic saying that goes, ‘a healthy brain needs a healthy body’ so from that I believe that people who are against women’s sports are actually against women,” Jeddah resident Hashim Larry, 27, told Reuters. “They come from the same group of ‘don’t allow women to work and drive’.”

OVERWHELMING PRESSURE

The pressure against women in sports is intense and comes from senior figures in a clerical establishment that is closely allied to the ruling al-Saud family.

In 2010 Sheikh Abdulkareem al-Khudair, who also sits on the Supreme Council for Religious Scholars, renewed a religious edict banning sports for women, which he said “will lead to following in the footsteps of the devil.”

He said it is not permitted to request that the government introduce sports in schools for girls because such activity is forbidden in Islam. Such comments from a high ranking cleric have immense influence in the monarchy, which rules in alliance with the conservative clerics.

When Jeddah United returned from a tournament in which they played the Jordanian national team, in 2009, a local newspaper published their photograph under the headline: “Shameless girls.”

The religious pressure is so great that even female gyms have to wear a non-sporting fig leaf, masquerading as “health centers” that are regulated not by a national sports body but by the Health Ministry.

Fees are so high, at a minimum of 1,000 riyals ($266) a month, that only the affluent can afford membership.

In 2009 a clampdown on unlicensed female gyms gave rise to a women’s rights campaign in newspapers and blogs, with the sarcastic slogan “Let her get fat!”. “As a nation we need to focus on preventative measures that include healthy lifestyle, specifically nutrition and fitness and early detection (of women’s illnesses),” said Princess Reema al-Saud, who is leading the climb to Everest base camp.

“The inspiration to climb Everest base camp came from the basic idea that a healthy lifestyle and healthy body can fight illness better,” she added.

JEDDAH UNITED

The lack of facilities for women is a significant barrier in a country where gender segregation is strictly enforced.

While girls’ state schools are barred from teaching physical education and consequently have no sports facilities, some private schools and private universities are very well equipped.

Jeddah United practices in one of the few courts available for women, surrounded by 5-meter (16-foot) concrete walls, which it rents for 7,000 to 10,000 riyals a month. Members get training and the opportunity to play three times a week for a monthly fee of 600 riyals.

“We believe that (Jeddah United) is a pressure group to promote a healthy lifestyle on a local level and on an international level,” said the team’s founder, Lina al-Maeena. “We play a role of sport diplomacy by building bridges and breaking stereotypes of Saudi women. I hope that we are paving the way.”

Malhas, the equestrian who might yet be selected to represent the kingdom in London, trained in exclusively private facilities in Saudi Arabia. She has already competed in international tournaments, which she travelled to by herself, financed not by the state but by her own family. In the Singapore Youth Olympics in 2010 she stood on the podium to receive a bronze medal, although she was not officially delegated to represent the kingdom.

“I think women playing sports should ignore the criticisms they get from society,” Fitiany said. “That is a kind of struggle, standing strong and not caring what people say.”
